Safeguarding young & vulnerable people

We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for all.

Safeguarding

All children, young people and vulnerable people have the right to feel safe and be safe at all times, including when participating in sport.

Yarra Plenty Waves and Yarra Swim School are committed to providing a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for all children, young people and vulnerable people.

We have adopted Swimming Australia’s National Integrity Framework, including:

  • Safeguarding Children and Young People Policy

  • Member Protection Policy

These policies outline our zero-tolerance approach to harm, abuse and neglect, and set clear expectations for behaviour across our club and swim school.

Copies of these policies are available via the Safe Sport section of the Swimming Australia website (www.swimming.org.au), as well as within our club governance documents.

Our commitment

We are committed to:

  • promoting the safety and wellbeing of all participants

  • providing a safe and inclusive environment

  • ensuring all members understand their responsibilities

  • responding promptly and appropriately to any concerns

Screening and recruitment

In accordance with the Safeguarding Children and Young People Policy:

  • all staff and volunteers are subject to appropriate recruitment, screening and training processes

  • all staff, committee members, coaches, officials and volunteers who may have unsupervised contact with children are required to hold a valid Working with Children Check

Raising a Concern

We encourage all members to speak up if they have any concerns about safety, behaviour or wellbeing. Concerns can be raised with a coach, committee member or our Grievance Officer. All matters will be managed in a confidential, respectful and timely manner.

If a child is at immediate risk of harm, please contact 000.

The Yarra River, from which our club is named, is known as Birrarung, meaning River of Mists in the language of Woiwurrung spoken by the Wurundjeri.

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as the traditional custodians of this land. We respect their unique ability to care for the country and their deep spiritual connection to it. We honour Elders Past and present, who have resided in the area and who are an integral part of the region's history.
